ACMA Expands Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Sites with New Website Blocks

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has intensified its efforts to combat unlawful online gambling by directing local internet providers to block several additional websites, including Crown Slots and Billy Billion.

These enforcement actions come after investigations revealed these platforms were violating the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. ACMA’s approach to protecting Australian users includes blocking access to unlicensed gambling websites, which do not meet national regulatory standards or offer essential consumer protections.

Since initiating its first website block in November 2019, ACMA has restricted access to 1,178 illegal gambling and affiliate sites. These efforts form part of a broader regulatory push that began in 2017, which has already led to about 220 unauthorized gambling operators exiting the Australian market.

ACMA continues to caution the public that while some gambling websites may appear legitimate, unlicensed services operate without proper oversight, leaving users vulnerable to financial loss with little chance of recovery.

In addition to blocking access, ACMA maintains a searchable public registry of legally approved wagering services and offers tools on its website for identifying suspicious platforms and lodging complaints.

Last month alone, the agency blocked eight more illegal sites, including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, and Wild Pokies. These actions are part of ACMA’s broader agenda, which recently included investigating a major television network for airing gambling ads during the 2024 Australia Formula 1 Grand Prix in breach of broadcasting standards.
